Patio Express bakery opens on campus January 25

The Culinary Arts PSTR 2331 class announces the opening of the Patio Express – an on-campus bakery – on Wednesday, January 25. Sweet and savory pastries, gourmet coffee as well as healthier choices will be available and served fresh daily. The Patio Express, located in the Student Center (Bldg. 106), will be open 8 – 11 a.m.

Join A Club Day is Wed., Jan. 25

Student Life will host a Join A Club Day event on Wednesday, January 25 in the Campus Center (Bldg. 156) from 12 – 1:30 p.m. Representatives for all campus clubs and organizations will be on hand soliciting for new members, answering your questions and providing information about their organizations. If you have an interest currently not represented by a student club, information on starting a club will also be available. For more information, stop by the Student Life office in Bldg. 106, room 100.

CTC named military-friendly school for fifth consecutive year

Military Advanced Education (MAE) has selected Central Texas College (CTC) for inclusion in its 5th Annual Guide to America’s Top Military-Friendly Colleges & Universities. Each honored school was selected by a panel of judges from the fields of both education and the military based on each institution’s favorable policies towards the men and women of the military.

From community colleges to state universities and nationally-known centers of higher learning, MAE’s Annual Guide to America’s Top Military-Friendly Colleges & Universities provides service members with information about schools that go out of their way to give back to our men and women in uniform.

Among the attributes considered in evaluating this year’s schools for inclusion in the Guide are the number of ACE credits the school will accept, Servicemember Opportunity Colleges (SOC) participation, on-campus active duty/veteran assistance, the support provided to the families of our service members and the sophistication and effectiveness of its distance learning programs, to name but a few.

“The Guide has become an invaluable tool for both education service officers/specialists and base transition officers when advising service members about degree and certification opportunities currently available from institutions of higher learning,” said Glenn R. Berlin, MAE associate publisher.

CTC has served active and retired military and family members for more than 40 years and offers associate degrees and certificates designed for the military student via face-to-face and distance learning options and provides maximum credit for military education and training.

With campuses across the continental United States, the Pacific Far East to include mainland Japan, Okinawa and Korea, locations across Europe as well as deployed locations in Southwest Asia, CTC also offers classes on ships at sea and online to civilians and the military through the Army´s eArmyU program, MarineNet and the Navy´s PACE program. In addition to on-site operations in deployed locations, CTC has developed various other educational delivery methods such as classes on CD-ROM, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and ipods for military personnel who are unable to attend classes and do not have regular Internet access.

CTC offers mobile app to obtain college information

Central Texas College (CTC) now offers anytime access to important information about the community college through a new mobile application (app). Students and the community can access telephone numbers, campus news, events, maps and more through the app provided by Mobile Access (MOX).

The new mobile app is available for iPhone, iPad and iTouch as well as Android and Blackberry phones. Through the app, students can access important numbers to campus offices and departments. Users can also gain quick access to campus news and events straight from the CTC website. The events can then be downloaded to one’s personal calendar for quick and easy reminders.

The app also contains a campus map so users can easily locate buildings, classrooms and points of interest on campus. Directions to campus locations and photos are provided on the app through Google Maps.

To access the CTC mobile app, users simply need to visit the MOX – Mobile App Setup web page at http://www.ctcd.edu/socialmediamox.html.

“This is an excellent way our students can access the information they need when venturing to campus,” noted Barbara Merlo, director of CTC Community Relations and Marketing. “They can find the relevant department phone numbers, locate the buildings for registration, transcripts or classrooms for easy navigation around campus. The app is also a great tool for students or the community in general to keep abreast of the many campus events we offer and any campus news that may be of importance to them.”

CTC recognizes LVN nursing graduates

The CTC Nursing Department held a pinning ceremony Friday night in the school’s Campus Center to honor students in the vocational nursing (LVN) program. Twenty-six students received their pins upon completing 70 credit hours of course work. Guest speaker for the event was CTC nursing instructor Brenda Krause, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC.

Graduating with honors for maintaining at least a 3.5 grade point average were Crystal Malone, Meagan Banks and Maria English.

The pinning event featured the traditional candle lighting ceremony which serves as a tribute to the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale. The pin symbolizes a medal of excellence which Nightingale presented to her outstanding graduate nurses. Today, nursing graduates select a faculty member, family member or loved one to place the pin on their uniform marking the passage of the student nurse role to the role of a practicing nurse.

Students completed the vocational nursing program are now qualified to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses.

Central Texas College Main Campus Closed; Fort Hood Campus has limited hours during holiday break

Central Texas College main campus in Killeen will be closed now through Jan.1. All offices will reopen on Jan. 2

Student Services at the CTC Fort Hood Campus will be open during the holiday break, with services limited to classroom operations and student information. Registration, admissions and business office functions will not be available.
The hourse are:
Monday-Thursday (Dec 19-22): 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Friday (Dec 23): 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Monday – Thursday (Dec26-29): 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Friday (Dec. 30): 11:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Registration will resume at both campuses January 2.

The Mayborn planetarium will be open for matinee shows Dec. 27-30.

Central Texas College (CTC) recently announced its employees of the year for the central, Fort Hood and Service Area campuses. Also recognized were the department of the year, students’ choice teacher of the year and the Chancellor’s Award recipient as selected by CTC Chancellor Dr. James Anderson.

The employees of the year are:

Fort Hood and service area campuses: Janill Deal, CTC Ft. Hood representative – Student Services – Soldier Development Center, Fort Hood campus; and Mary Jackson, office assistant II – Service Area campus

CTC recognizes nursing graduates

The CTC Nursing Department held a pinning ceremony Friday night in the school’s Campus Center to honor students in both the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program. Forty-one students received their pins upon completing 71 credit hours of course work and clinical rotations. Guest speaker for the event was CTC nursing instructor Kim Shahry, RN, MSN.

Graduating with honors for maintaining at least a 3.5 grade point average were Elenor Corpuz, Harriett Gates, Holida Kinamo-Sloan, Kim Malcolm and Jennifer Shorey. Gates was also recognized as the recipient of the Caring Heart Award.

Students completed the registered nursing program are now qualified to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses.

CTC named safest campus in Texas

Central Texas College (CTC) was cited as the safest college on campus according to a recent study completed by StateUniversity.com. CTC ranked first in the state and fifth safest campus in the nation based on campus crime statistics accounting for the severity and frequency of crime. The statistics are based per 1,000 students. This marks the second consecutive time CTC was ranked as the safest campus in Texas. The last survey was conducted in 2009.

StateUniversity.com compared crime statistics for more than 450 colleges and universities nationwide and assigned each school a safety score based on frequency and severity of crime reported. CTC earned a safety rating of 99.1 and was the only Texas school to make the top 10 in the country. Safety ratings are determined based on the number of occurrences of aggravated assault, robbery, burglary, theft/larceny, motor vehicle theft and more violent crimes. These are then weighed based on the probability of each incident happening to each student. Violent crime is given more weight in the ranking system and has a greater effect on the safety rating than non-violent crime such as theft.

The StateUniversity.com website is a top online reference destination for students and features information about schools, careers and financial aid. It serves more than 1.4 million monthly visitors.

Academic Studio hosts “Study Up” for last-minute final exam preparations

The CAST of the Academic Studio will host an all-day “Study Up” on Friday December 9 in the Student Center (Bldg. 106, room 109)to help students prepare for final exams. From 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., students can meet with mentors, tutors and faculty members to assist students with their last-minute academic needs before finals week. Assistance with practice questions, paper reviews, speech rehearsals, presentations, projects, research papers and more will be available.

Also that day from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., the Academic Studio will hold its CAST Wrap Party as it is the last day tutoring will be available this semester. Stop in for free snacks and drinks. Other refreshments will be also available throughout the day for the “Study Up.”
