The Central Texas College (CTC) aviation team earned second place honors at the recent Region IV National Intercollegiate Flying Association Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) competition held last week at Skylark Field in Killeen. CTC captured first place in the overall team flying events and third place in the ground events to finish in second place behind LeTourneau University. With second place honors, CTC now qualifies for the national SAFECON flying competition to be held at Ohio State University in May 2011.
Individual honors were won by Anthony Wise and David Peters who finished second and third respectively in the Top Regional Pilot category. CTC student pilots also earned individual awards in the following categories:
Aircraft Pre-Flight Inspection – Peters, second place; Timothy Grunden, seventh place
Computer Accuracy – Wise, sixth place
Aircraft Recognition – Mason Ross, eighth place
Ground Trainer – Wise, first place; Peters, fifth place
Simulated Comprehensive Aircraft Navigation – Wise, fifth place
Message Drop – Jeremy Booker and Robert Randle, sixth place
Navigation – Peters and Tyler Cronquist, first place; Wise and Phillip McKee, fifth place; Joe Sunbarger and Randle, sixth place
Power-Off Landings – Wise, second place; Peters, fourth place
Short Field Landing – Wise, second place; Peters, sixth place; Sunbarger, ninth place
More than 100 student pilots from seven colleges participated in the regional event. Competing schools were CTC, Delta State University (Mississippi), Hinds Community College (Mississippi), Louisiana Tech, University of Louisiana at Monroe, LaTourneau University (Longview, TX) and Texas State Technical College (Waco, TX).
CTC student pilots participating in the regional event were Keith Blackman, Booker, Jonathan Bradley, Cronquist, Grunden, McKee, Redi Neziri, Peters, Randle, Ross, Rudy Smith, Endri Sulaj, Andrew Wise, Anthony Wise and Chris Young.
CTC, along with third place finisher Delta State and champion LeTourneau University, will now advance to the national SAFECON event scheduled for May 16-21, 2011, at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. Last year, CTC finished third in the two-year school category and 27th overall in the national event.
